Another update on the small scale aquaponics system, or scrap heap aquaponics as I call it. Fist video was shot in early March, this proved to show the limitations of the design, a storm showed all the weak points and it has now been modified to take a hell of a battering. Point to all of this is that you dont need stacks of space to grow your own food, nor do you need lots of money, which is something people forget, everything I use to build this system is found from skips or builders, if you talk to people you’ll be surprised what they have that they dont want, but I personaly always make sure they get something in return, I call it fair barter, they give, I give back. Today we’re going through the beginnings of our 50 Gallon indoor system. Our 50 Gallon system has been working great, besides having to tweak it every now and then. We added fish December 14th, starting with 1 koi and 3 fry. Later that week, we got another Koi. Then the next day, another koi as well as 2 algae eaters. Sadly 1 of the algae eaters had died on it’s first night in the system for reasons unknown. The most likely answer seems to be shock, since the other fish were fine.

. Phosphorus is an essential component in all forms of life – it forms part of the structural framework of DNA and RNA molecules. It’s used in a variety of industries, but mostly as an important (and very much abused) agricultural fertilizer. It appears that as a result of the consumption of phosporus for agriculture over the last 100 years or so, the world is heading for a supply crunch. According to Associate Professor Cynthia Mitchell from the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, the world’s deposits of phosphorus will be depleted in about 50 years. The solution – our pee! It seems that we excrete around a hundred gallons of the stuff each per year and it’s one of the most concentrated sources of phosphorus. I remember stories from my father regarding his father and others using urine to water tomatos whilst interred in a prisoner of war camp in World War II. Those tomatos provided much needed vitamins for the men and probably helped some survive their time of incarceration given the horrible conditions. So, how do the boffins propose collecting this urine? Through urine separating toilets – and they have been on the market for quite a while …
