I have an area on the west side of the building, gets the morning sun and then is shady the rest of the day. I was thinking to plant some flowering plants, or maybe some herbs. I’m not sure what would work best.
I have a spot on the EAST side of the building that gets morning sun only.
Are fuschias happy in a morning sun only location? I LOVE fuschias!

I love Sweet Peas but the harsh sun in my area (no large tree in the yard) is terrible for plants. Does anyone know if I can grow them successfully indoors and not move them outside? I have a green thumb but this climate is a challenge. Also, the same goes for bulb plants. Can I grow those indoors? I love gladiolas but they just burn in the sun and the back yard does not have enough light (covered porch) Thanks for the help.

I would love to grow vegetables in pots in my patio area and herbs on my windowsill, however my kitchen windowsill opens into a completely enclosed patio area (it might as well be an extra room) so there is no natural sunlight available. Does anyone know if/how I can grow vegetables and herbs in pots with no direct sunlight? Which ones should I choose?
Thanks

I have an area next to my porch that right now is just sand. I need something that will grow well in a pot since it’s an apt and well in shade but it is still hot (florida summers). My basil isn’t doing too well maybe because it’s TOO hot but that’s only plant I have. I don’t care what kind of plant, herb, ornimental, flower doesn’t matter just easy to take care of and that will grow there. Any ideas? Thanks

I am moving to Yucca Valley in Jan(from Ohio) and want to be prepared to plant the seeds in early spring. I want flowers that will grow in the natural desert soil without adding topsoil and ones that wont need much watering after they are established. I have a lot of area to work with so I want to do areas with wildflowers and also regular flowers. Ive been doing tons of searches but surprisingly enough cannot find any one book or source for desert flowers, so am trying to figure it out by searching :
arid soil, sandy soil, zone 9, full sun etc and then trying to pick out ones common to all the lists. Unfortunately, while I have found a lsome useful information about wild flowers, I’ve found very little on *regular* flowers.. So if anyone has experience with flower gardening in the Mojave/desert any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much . Mykiel

I have been having some horrible luck getting my mint started this year. I am on my third try and out of an entire packet of seeds have gotten only five sprouts. Any suggestions? These are inside starts and I am using Miracle grow in the starter pots. Also my lavender started fine bit seems to be stunting out. It is planted in an area of 80% sun 20% shade. The rest of herbs are doing wonderfully so I am at a real loss as to what is going on.
When I moved into my apartment, the “garden” area outside my door was nothing but a spot of dirt with lint all over it. I decided to plant a chinese fan palm and a few colorful flowers in that area to make this place seem more like a home. I expected this palm to grow upward, but it appears to only be growing outward. One branch will soon be protruding into my walk-space. How can I trim this thing back without killing it or opening it up for disease? Bear in mind that it’s November in the South. The weather is in constant flux. Any suggestions?

I planted mammoth sunflowers last year and next to it grew which looks like a sunflower plant but there was no flowers on it just a weird green thing growing out of the top. Well this year in that same area theres about 25 more tall plants growing there. They look just like sunflower plants tall and same kinda leaves but no flowers just that weird green bunch on top. I tried lookin it up for days and I dont see anything like it.
Could it be an herb that looks like that and grows that tall? Maybe whoever lived here before us grew something there. I have no idea. I dont want to pick it if its goin to be a pretty flower or something but then again if its nothing I want it out.
Tanks hope someone can help. Oh Im in central california if that helps at all.
