Everybody just wants more and more. I say, live with simplicity! Keep rainwater tanks, compost bins and grow vegetables and trees! Who cares about the tint on your car, or the style of your clothes!

I found great composite wood look heavy duty snap together raised beds at sam’s club very reasonable, but now have to fill them with soil. Square foot gardening book recommends 1/3 coarse vermiculite, 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 compost – I’m worried this will dry out very quickly in our Florida sun and am tempted to use at least a good percentage of Miracle grow garden soil Does anyone have experience with “Mel’s mix” soil and can you tell me if it dries out rapidly? Our prime gardening season (fall) is coming up and I plan to be ready with my new raised beds! The beds will be in mostly sun and placed directly on the ground.

I read that plants that have been sprayed with pesticide cannot be added to compost. Why not? I am growing vegetables and a little pesticide is a must. I usually use all natural or organic pesticide and only use it sparingly. What would be so bad about putting this plant material in a compost bin?

I am starting to grow some fruits and vegetables, and started to through some waste in a bucket (no drainage in the bucket). Things like eggshells, avocado skin, rotten fruits and vegetables, etc. I have left it for about a week. Do I need to do something different? Do I need drainage, or should I leave the compost in the ground apose to a bucket, how long does it take? should I mix it with the dirt?, do i need to water it? when do i know when the compost is ready (color, texture)? Thanks, sorry about the extensive questions? (I’m a first time gardener)

I started a compost pile in a large potter (I only have a potted garden on apartment porch) I understand the importance of green and brown, but I dont ever put brown in because I dont have anything (clippings, newspaper, etc). Well I just put my vegetable/fruit scraps in there w/ a little soil. I occasionally turn it, but man there are a lot of fruit flies!!! I am afraid they will get to my veggies I am growing and eat the wrong thing. Is this OK? Any suggestions?
