How do I build a garden on my balcony?

I live in an apartment with a balcony. I would like to grow my own vegetables and herbs such as cilantro. How do I build a vegetable garden on my balcony. Lots of sun shines on my balcony in the morning and some to none by mid-afternoon/evening. I appreciate your gardening wisdom.

Getting started in container gardening – NO vegetables or herbs!?

Can anyone give some basic pointers on designing and planting annuals or perennials for container gardening? I am not interested in growing vegetables or herbs, but am very intrigued by my new gardening hobby. I have almost no bed space to speak of, so I thought color containers would be a good way to go.

Are there any basics that i need to know – like soil mixes (lots of people say “just use Miracle Grow potting soil”) – container types, how much room do roots need, how many plants can i fit in a given container size, for that matter, how do i know the size of a given container?

Thanks for any good advice!

Where is a good gardening web site?

Does anyone know of a good gardening web site where I can find a list of what kind of plants and vegtables to plant and when to plant them ? I have for some unknown reason been bitten by the “bug” and am chomping at the bit to give it a try… I used to really enjoy working in my familys flower and vegtable garden when I was a child.

I would like to have some kind of plants or flowers to grow most of the year…as far as the vegtable garden I was thinking along the lines of the more basic items…corn, tomatoes, squash, beans, melons..things like that, but things i could grown and tend to throughout the year.

I know that this may seem like a big question, but I really think I can do this…grow things I mean.

Any advice ya’ll could give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Michael

What defines English culture?

I live in the Uk – born here. But I do not like the culture. I am not materialistic, I don’t drink, I don’t eatch TV, I try to get away from selfish hedonistic thinking – I like green ecoliving and walking and hiking and gardening and plan to work with children and learn about permaculture.

Ithink the UK GENERALLy not all people – is totally crap in its attitude towards children and that spills out ot attitudes towards humanity.

Will I fit in anywhere

Growing Herbs?

I like to cook and I want to get herbs like sage, rosemary, thyme, and mint. I live in southern Wisconsin and I was wondering if anyone had any tips to keep them alive. My gardening track record isn’t so good! Most plants I put outside die (besides tulips). I am thinking of keeping them in pots somewhere, but if for some reason that is a bad idea I do have a backyard that is extremely rocky; most of it gets full, scorching sun all day but a few small parts are shaded. Thanks.

Question about Aeroponic gardening system? (10 Points for Best Answer)?

So I was originally interested in Hydroponics (And I still may revert back to that plan depending on the answers I get here) but then I discovered Aeroponics.

Long story short, I’ve VERY interested in pursuing this, but I definitely have a couple of questions and hurdles.

1) I can’t afford to purchase a ready-made system, and I won’t be able to for a very long time. I’ve found instructions on how to make a very decent one of your own, but the only part I don’t understand is how you time it to spray/mist every 15 seconds. Obviously you need a timer, but what kind and how do you attach it?

2) Next, I’ve gathered that there’s some sort of nutrient mix that I’ll need to mix into my reservoir. How much will this cost? I know of several hydroponic shops in my city, but I’ve never gone into one to check.

3) I know of these mandatory things: Keeping the nutrient level right, keeping the pH level right, and keeping the timing of the misters right so the roots stay properly moist. Is there any other major “make or break” thing I should know about that I havent read about?

Thank you very much. (Also, I am very aware there is much more to it than what I’m asking — I’m simply asking about the parts I do not understand. I understand the rest.)
