Squarefoot Gardening – Our Garden Season of 2010

A glimpse inside the world of our humble garden – this covers the 2010 season of our squarefoot garden – we only use organic materials – we compost – and we use a drip irrigation system. Our garden size is 30 x 50 feet but because we squarefoot garden we can produce enough food in the boxes you see for a family of four – that is more then we can eat ourselves so we give a lot of it away:) We don’t pretend to know everything when gardening – we learn every year and make plenty of mistakes but it is so much fun doing it that even the mistakes are fun:) We got addicted to this type of gardening years ago when we first seen the squarefoot gardening show on PBS, and ever since that time we have been gardening that way, we will never go back to row gardening. We hope you enjoy this quick look into our garden, keep an eye out for the garden of 2011 which I have yet to make:)

Does anyone have any good recipes using cayenne peppers?

I am a novice at herb gardening, I was told to grow cayenne peppers near the herbs to keep the insects away. Now I have more cayenne peppers than I know what to do with.

First time gardening? How can I clear the weeds and pick the best flowers?

I’m moving into a duplex and we have flower “boxes” along the side of our house. The boxes face the north and there is a house right next door so I’m guessing there will be a lot of shade.

The boxes are completely covered in weeds and have not been taken care of in a long time. Should I just empty everything out and start fresh? If so, what kinds of flowers will be low-maintenance? Can I grow herbs?

I’ve never done this before and would absolutely appreciate any advice you’d like to give! Thanks!
I live in MN…

Also, would planting in August be too late?

How deep does soil have to be to plant flowers in? Please help?

I don’t know much about gardening… but I moved to a place that had patio stones throughout the whole backyard. Underneath the patio stones is screening. (you know.. tiny tiny rocks or gravel-like rocks).
So I made a small flowerbed and put 3 inches of soil over the screening. (under the screening is clay because the land used to be an apple orchard)
So I bought already grown flowers: Dahlias, Geraniums, Petunias. Then I planed them in the flowerbed. Are they going to die because they don’t have enough depth of soil to grow roots in the ground underneath? If so.. please tell me how much soil do I need to have on top of the screening so I could re-plant the flowers?

Thank you so much if you can help!
