I’ll have to admit that I had never heard of Lani Hall before I heard her sing another song, “I Don’t Want You To Go” on the radio back in 1980. I immediately went out and bought a copy of the 45rpm record. The following year, this song, “Come What May,” was released, and I liked it enough to buy the album “Blush,” which featured both songs. Lani Hall was a member of Sérgio Mendes’ group Brasil ’66 who recorded such songs as “Fool On The Hill” and “The Look of Love.” The band toured alongside A&M labelmates (and label founder) Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass in 1966. Lani Hall eventually left Brasil ’66 in 1971 and married Alpert in 1974. With her husband assuming production and arranging duties, Hall embarked on a solo career releasing an album nearly every other year from 1972 until 1987. In 1980, she released her fifth solo album “Blush” which included “Come What May, ” a song she recorded with Herb Alpert. The song was released as a single the following year. In 1983, she performed the title song to the James Bond film “Never Say Never Again.” Lani Hall continues to record and in 2008, she reunited with Mendes again, performing vocals on the song “Dreamer” on his album “Encanto.” Come What May (Words and Music by Allee Willis and David Lasley) Wish I was your child Hold me in your heart We could love so free and know we’d never part But I’m not a child and wishes are just child’s play my love No, I’ll never be afraid of who I am and who I’m not come what may Wish I …

Here is a great satire of Herb talking about were they all came from while listening to a great track. Clip is from the 1967 Herb and TJB Singer show shown on NBC. Tune is from Whipped Cream album.Enjoy. PS I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to see Herb and Lani play at Blues Alley in Georgetown Washington DC 12 May 2008. The show was absolutely spectacular. After all these years, they both still have it: the skills and the love. Truly a remarkable show. Herb and Lani, thanks to all of the wonderful years of warming our hearts with your great art work. You both are truly blessed as well as I was at your show.
