how do you divide canna Lilly bulbs?

I have a large canna plant with nice red flowers, the bulb which I was given was approx 5-6 inches by 9-10 inches. The plant is growing great with at least 12-14 shoots about 5ft high with multi flowers on each. As I live in upstate NY USA I know that I have to dig up the bulb an put it away for the winter. When and how do you divide the bulb without killing it?

How do you get rid of flowers that keep coming back?

I live in N.E. Indiana. They are the tall orange lilly-looking things that grow on the side of the road. They go along my side walk to my deck, and they are getting so big that they get in the way of the side walk. I’ve tried digging them up, but they are soooooo persistant!

Lilly of the valley?

I’m doing some new landscaping around the house, I’ve got Lilly of the valley already growing and I love it, But I think I need some color in there. I need some flowers that can hold thier own against LOV and can grow in almost complete shade. I’d like to do a Perennial, But an Anual is ok too.

LOV are known for spreading very quickly and I’m afraid if I plant anything else there, LOV will take over and not let the new flower blossom..

Any ideas?
