It always amazes me that in a country obsessed with cleanliness and germs, we in the United States still assume that a quick rinse under cold water is sufficient to clean our foods before eating. Think about it. Pesticides, fertilizers, dirt, road grit, molds, fungi, waxes – or worse! On your food! I believe that, like Australia, we in the US will soon make fruit and vegetable washes part of our daily routine.
Detergent residues on dishes have already been linked to specific health problems. I for one prefer to use time proven soap based technology to maintain my world. The human organism evolved to deal with the chemical combinations found in our natural world. For the past hundred years or so we have bombarded ourselves with new chemical combinations on our food, in our air, water and soil, and on our bodies. Why use questionable chemicals to clean off other questionable chemicals?
All the competing food washes I have checked out were made from the same detergent bases we are being told to keep off our bodies. Some are even touted as organic, while offering no substantiation to back up that claim. Perhaps they mean that it will work on organic foods. Or perhaps they mean organic in the organic chemistry sense – meaning that the chemicals are made from carbon atoms. Soap products have been safely used by humans for thousands of years – detergents for less than a hundred. Which would you (and/or your customers) prefer?
Vermont Soap Organics Fruit & Veggie Wash can be used a number of ways. Pour into a spray bottle for a convenient spray and rinse. Apply directly to foods and rinse. Apply to a brush – scrub and rinse. Add to a container of water for root crops and larger volumes. Add just enough Produce Magic to the water to work up a hint of foam. Don’t worry about using too much, actual percentage required will vary with the temperature and hardness of your water.
