Growing plants without light?

I tried a little experiment and tried growing a plant without light in a hydroponic system. I’m currently using a combination of top feed and recirculating DWC. The plant gets 0 hours of light. It’s been 2 weeks so far and the plant is only about 4 inches tall. The roots on the other hand are massive and have developed into an extremely large root mass.

If i keep it in the hydroponic system for 2 more weeks and then introduce a 400 watt high pressure sodium bulb, will the plant grow extremely fast seeing that it already has a very nice root system developed? or will the plant gradually die?

What is the significance of mass/prayer cards and a crucifix found buried in a yard/garden?

My husband and I recently moved into a new house and have started doing some gardening now that the weather has turned warm. Twice now, he has encountered Catholic iconic items buried in areas where we have dug to put in vegetables or flowers (mass/prayer cards w/ the Virgin Mother) and this weekend, he discovered a crucifix buried in the roots of a rosebush he was trying to move. We’re both Protestant, although I did attend a Catholic highschool, and we are puzzled by the finds. I’m familiar with the tradition of burying a statue of St. Joseph when you are trying to sell a house, but can anyone enlighten me on the burial of the prayer cards and the crucifix? We haven’t found animal remains that might suggest the burial of a pet – just the artifacts.

Can greenhouses entirely replace agriculture?

In the event that we really screw ourselves with environmental failure, can we mass produce our fruits and veggies in an artificial environment?

So instead of prairies and farms, we’ll have endless landscapes of gleaming glass and steel in which we use advanced robotics and hydroponics to produce our foods.

Is this doable? It’ll be our ticket to rapid colonization and development of other worlds if it is!
My title is incorrect. I meant replace “traditional” agriculture.

Another note, this kinda thing would financed by a sort of new government initiative, one of emergency in direct relation to the global situation, when crops stop growing and so forth.

So I guess a better question would be, can the economy take this kind change? That of course is a whole other question…

Hydroponic VS Organic which is better for the planet?

In this day and age of farmlands taking up mass amounts of land for farms/development i really don’t see how Organic farming is better then Hydroponics…with Hydroponics you can have the food you want quicker, healthier, and fresher with crop yeild never fearing from outside conditions.

After reading that article i feel that Organic farming isn’t going to help the earth out as much. Whats your opinions on the matter? What is better for us and the planet hydroponics or organics? Please do some research on the subject before answering.
There is a huge difference between Hydroponic and Genetically altered plants. Hydroponic plants generally get all the nutrients without the roots having to dig around in the earth for it. my grandmother has both hydroponics and organic gardens and while some plants have more flavor in the soil other plants have more flavor in hydroponic.
And to answer one posters question about if it would wield more crops just look at the vertical farming project. http://www.verticalfarm.com/

Would CO2 emissions from ethanol production trump or equal emmissions from fossil sources?

I’m thinking not, but a buddy of mine insisted that mass ethanol production would be just as bad as current CO2 emmissions with a fossil based fuel diet. I would think the increase in biomass from plant life might factor in, and also that much of the CO2 might be harvested to create optimal growth condition in “plant growth factories” etc…assuming hydroponic media would be used. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems like the CO2 consumption of the plants harvested would outweigh the CO2 released during ethanol fermentation.
