Whats wrong with genetically modified crops?

resistance to pesticides and pests, better and more consistant crops.
Take for example this hypothetical situation:
A plant is plagued by a fungus that lives in the soil. It affects the roots and eventually kills the plant. now say there are fields and fields of such plant, and one of them just happens to have developed a rare genetic mutation (mutations in DNA happen naturally in quite large amounts but few have any effects) that just so happens to make it resistant to that fungus. It grows to be healthy while all the plants around it die. This plant then flowers and seeds and produces a whole load more plants, all of which are resistant to this fungus. Now just suppose this plant has fruits and a farmer spots these plants are flourishing and takes them back to his farm and replaces his mouldy plants with these improved ones. Everybody is happy because there are now healthier plants and more fruits.
But say a scientist spots a plant that suffers from a similar problem and uses some genetic tools to tweak the plant to solve its problem and gives it to a farmer who is happy because his plants no longer die. This ‘modification’ may or may not have happened naturally given enough time.

The public are however not happy.

Now why is this?

10 POINTS! PESTICIDE QUESTIONS (2), i need help please and thank you …look below ?

1. In Atlantic Canada, synthetic pesticides called pyrethroids were used to control 2 pests in apple orchards – the winter moth and leaf miners. Unfortunetly, the chemicals killed more insects than intended, inlcuding those that preyed on red mites and apple mites. After spraying, the mite population rose quickly, causing damage to the trees and reducing the yeild of apples. What recommendations would you make to anyone considering using a new pesticide?

2. 4. the ideal pesticide has 4 characteristics. EXPLAIN why each of the characteritics is important and what the consequences are when the pesticide fails to meet each test. the pesticide should:

-kill only the intended pest;
-dissapear into something harmless after it works on the pest;
-not create a stock of resistant pests;
-be cheap to produce and use

Small transparent spots on indoor plant leaves?

I’ve noticed small transparent spots on the leaves of my indoor catnip plant and I was wondering the reason. Occasionally, I have also seen very small white bugs moving around the sides of the pot and on the leaves. I think I may also have a problem with fungus gnats with other plants in the same area of the house. I grow mostly herbs, so I’d like to keep treatments of pests safe and non-toxic (my cat included). Please, help!

I don’t think it could be whiteflies as the small (and they are very, very, very small) white bugs do not actually fly. I’m thinking more along the lines of scrapes or mites, but I’m not sure.

Lots of Questions!!! Gardening – Pests! Watering! Picking! Pruning! Citrus Replant Dying!?

Ok…I want to first say I appreciate any feedback and I am by no means what so ever a gardener. This is the first year we have tried a garden and I know nothing about anything lol… I am trying and learning by trial and error and googling and yahoo answering alot!

We have a small garden consisting of 1 zuchini plant, 1 cucumber, 1 lemon cucumber, 8 walla walla onion, 2 jalapeno, 1 wax pepper, 1 cherry tomato, two beefsteak tomato, and 2 early bird tomato.

We also replanted a tree that once belonged to my father in law who passed, it was removed from it’s native soil of 20 years and put into our yard with a very different soil.

Problem #1: my onions appear to be infested with gnats, that problem has now spread to my other plants! and in the AM when you look at my yard you can see hundreds of the little buggars everywhere flying around in a bug wonderland! I can see them in the soil. How can I get rid of them, we have tried 4 different types of sprays from Home Depot, it seems to work for a day or two then they are back! HELP!

Problem 2: Ants in soil and on leaves of cucumber, zuchinni, oinions and jalapeno. we’ve tried a million different tricks they keep coming back.

Problem 3: Zuchini – this is a big one. there are little holes on several leaves. it was doing fantastic but we had to move it due to it’s growth and after replant all budding zuch’s died, yellowed. then it began to do really well again, started to flower…then… aphid infestation, flowers began to die. we sprayed. it began flowering again…then sprouted 2 fatty zuch’s and now the leaves are ALL starting to yellow and flowers are dying.. i’m watering the same and no further infestations that I can see. help!

problem 4: jalapeno plants sproouted about 10 good size jalapenos…how do i know when they are ripe? also one of them is not flowering any more? help!

problem 5: wax peppers – when do i pick them?

problem 6: cucumber doesn’t look like it’s doing anything but vining out…suggestions?

problem 7: cherry tomatoes are in abundance but ton of gnats! they are not turning red, have been plump and green for almost 6 weeks… is that normal?

problem 8: my nephew was telling me i need to prune thge tomato leaves, how do i know how and when to do that. each of or tomato plants are in a 3 gallon planter seperate. and when do i know its ok to pick fruit, we have several that are already red on the early bird and only about 2-3″ diameter.

Most importantly!!! Citrus replant… A history on this.. my father in law passed last january and he was an avid gardener. he had a huge orchard on his 2 acres- 20+ years, rich soil, rich yummy fruit. he passed and the property had to be sold so my mother in law requested each family member take a tree and replant it at their home before escrow closed. we chose a meyer lemon tree. it is mature, aprox 20 yrs old. we replanted. our soil is very different. we didn’t know better and root ball was small crown much larger. after replant my husband way over watered and it lost all leaves. we salvaged it.. stopped and gave it vitamins (thanks to yahoo answers), slowed on watering, trimmed it back… it started to look better and grow new green twigs… a few weeks later they turned brown. now it has not sprouted one leaf. it looks brown and dead. it stands aprox 7′ and has a crown aprox 10′ with 4 different large trunks making up the tree. we are now watering once a week. i’m scared because it usually starts flowering by august, by july the leaves are growing rich….its not doing anything right now and there are some parts that look like white ash has been rubbed on??? this is important to me, i can grow another garden next year, but i cannot grow another tree this important to or family. my son is 4 and keeps saying the tree is dying like grampa.. i feel an obligation to my father in law and son to see this tree back to health. i understand we may not get fruit for some time because of the shock of transplant… but shouldn’t it be gettign healthy by now, atleast begining to grow the foliage back?

Thank you yahoo community in advance for any and all help i am truly at a loss!

Vegetable garden design????

G’day, just moved to central Florida and am itching to get a raised veggie garden going. Any hints or tips (pests and disease avoidance) would be very appreciated :)

I need help with math.?

Julie is planning to make a garden in her backyard. The garden will be rectangular – 55 feet on one side and 72 feet on the other side. In order to keep animals out of the garden, Julie will be building a wire fence to protect the garden. To prepare the soil in the garden, she will be treating the soil with special fertilizer which prevents weeds and pests.

The wire fence can be purchased for 23.25 per yard (1 yard = 3 feet). You are not permitted to purchase a part of a yard.

She can purchase the special fertilizer at a cost of 9.75 per gallon. Each gallon will treat 850 square feet. The fertilizer is only available for sale by the gallon.

A. Compute the outside perimeter of garden and determine how much the wire fence will cost her.

B. How much will she need to spend on the special fertilizer?

Please show me how you got your answer. Thanks

what kinds of herbal sprays can I put on veggies to remove pests?

Im starting a vegetable garden in huge pots.Im a bit weary about putting harmful pesticides on my veggies and wondered if there was a way I could use something safe to spray on my veggies–like warm vinegar. Something safe. FYI: I am growing Broccoli, Cucumbers,Romaine lettuce,Spinach and Spearmint. I just planted the seeds yesterday. OH!! And what is Sod? How is this different from top soil? Is it a fertilizer?

Im not sure if I planted this stuff the right way, but I just got top soil, put the seeds in the dirt, watered it and gave it moderate sunlight. I brought my veggies in cause I figured it is too cool to leave out at night.

Thanks!

Hickory trees died /white bugs/red ants in roots?

I planted some hickory saplings in pots and almost all of them died after growing really well and when I pulled them from the pots I saw white bugs on the roots and up inside of the trees they looked like termites.What were they?Also some of the pots had red/brown small ants and these trees also died.What can I do to stop these bugs?I also want to plant fruit trees but I do not know what pests those might have.Obviously I have no idea what I am doing any any help in creating my orchard would be helpful.
Thank you Hondu.I already threw the dead trees into my pond thinking that the bugs caused the deaths.One of the hickories is still alive and I hope it makes it.Could the deaths be from something in my local soil since all of the trees grew in it before they died?

Are armadillos pests?

What’s the deal with armadillos? Do they get into the trash cans? Do they eat your vegetables from your garden? Do they torment your pets? Do they attack viciously when you step out for the paper?

Or do children chase them about, rolling them up into balls and throwing them hither and thither…?

Inquiring minds in California want to know.
