Ok…I want to first say I appreciate any feedback and I am by no means what so ever a gardener. This is the first year we have tried a garden and I know nothing about anything lol… I am trying and learning by trial and error and googling and yahoo answering alot!
We have a small garden consisting of 1 zuchini plant, 1 cucumber, 1 lemon cucumber, 8 walla walla onion, 2 jalapeno, 1 wax pepper, 1 cherry tomato, two beefsteak tomato, and 2 early bird tomato.
We also replanted a tree that once belonged to my father in law who passed, it was removed from it’s native soil of 20 years and put into our yard with a very different soil.
Problem #1: my onions appear to be infested with gnats, that problem has now spread to my other plants! and in the AM when you look at my yard you can see hundreds of the little buggars everywhere flying around in a bug wonderland! I can see them in the soil. How can I get rid of them, we have tried 4 different types of sprays from Home Depot, it seems to work for a day or two then they are back! HELP!
Problem 2: Ants in soil and on leaves of cucumber, zuchinni, oinions and jalapeno. we’ve tried a million different tricks they keep coming back.
Problem 3: Zuchini – this is a big one. there are little holes on several leaves. it was doing fantastic but we had to move it due to it’s growth and after replant all budding zuch’s died, yellowed. then it began to do really well again, started to flower…then… aphid infestation, flowers began to die. we sprayed. it began flowering again…then sprouted 2 fatty zuch’s and now the leaves are ALL starting to yellow and flowers are dying.. i’m watering the same and no further infestations that I can see. help!
problem 4: jalapeno plants sproouted about 10 good size jalapenos…how do i know when they are ripe? also one of them is not flowering any more? help!
problem 5: wax peppers – when do i pick them?
problem 6: cucumber doesn’t look like it’s doing anything but vining out…suggestions?
problem 7: cherry tomatoes are in abundance but ton of gnats! they are not turning red, have been plump and green for almost 6 weeks… is that normal?
problem 8: my nephew was telling me i need to prune thge tomato leaves, how do i know how and when to do that. each of or tomato plants are in a 3 gallon planter seperate. and when do i know its ok to pick fruit, we have several that are already red on the early bird and only about 2-3″ diameter.
Most importantly!!! Citrus replant… A history on this.. my father in law passed last january and he was an avid gardener. he had a huge orchard on his 2 acres- 20+ years, rich soil, rich yummy fruit. he passed and the property had to be sold so my mother in law requested each family member take a tree and replant it at their home before escrow closed. we chose a meyer lemon tree. it is mature, aprox 20 yrs old. we replanted. our soil is very different. we didn’t know better and root ball was small crown much larger. after replant my husband way over watered and it lost all leaves. we salvaged it.. stopped and gave it vitamins (thanks to yahoo answers), slowed on watering, trimmed it back… it started to look better and grow new green twigs… a few weeks later they turned brown. now it has not sprouted one leaf. it looks brown and dead. it stands aprox 7′ and has a crown aprox 10′ with 4 different large trunks making up the tree. we are now watering once a week. i’m scared because it usually starts flowering by august, by july the leaves are growing rich….its not doing anything right now and there are some parts that look like white ash has been rubbed on??? this is important to me, i can grow another garden next year, but i cannot grow another tree this important to or family. my son is 4 and keeps saying the tree is dying like grampa.. i feel an obligation to my father in law and son to see this tree back to health. i understand we may not get fruit for some time because of the shock of transplant… but shouldn’t it be gettign healthy by now, atleast begining to grow the foliage back?
Thank you yahoo community in advance for any and all help i am truly at a loss!
