Is there a deep root tree that is good to plant in central california that won’t break sidewalks?

I want to plant a tree in a medium sized yard, one that will grow fast and provide LOTS of shade, no fruit, flowers optional but prefer none, and one with a deep root system that won’t have shallow roots that will break the sidewalks or driveway. Does such a tree exist?
More info: Yard is medium to large in size with house on one side, sidewalks on 3 sides. Just removed a deodar cedar that was over 80 feet tall with a spread of about 45 to 50 feet that was planted much too close to the house. It was threatening the house foundation and was starting to drop lower branches and we feared for our house and passersby. This is a residential neighborhood in central California. We’d like a fast-growing deciduous tree that would provide good shade to the front room of the house but planted a good 15 feet further from the house than the previous tree.
We’d like a tree that would grow to 25-40 feet with a spread of around 25-30 feet. That would provide good shade for the yard and the front room of the house.

Is deep root feeding a superior method of taking care of trees and shrubs?

I have a small orchard and I am considering purchasing a Webster Deep Root Feeder for the fruits and other trees I have. Has anyone had any exposure to this method of caring for plants? What did you use to dig the holes? What ingredients did you use to treat the root systems? Has anyone used a Webster Feeder?

How do you start growing a rose from a piece of stem with no apparent root showing?

I was given a Long Stem White Rose which I placed in a vase with water. The Rose never fully bloomed. Instead, the stem started showing growth and the flower completely died. I cannot see any sign of rooting. How do I accomplish beginning a root base for the stem to continue producing growth for planting?
How short should I cut the stem before rooting? Should it be directly below the new growth or should I leave a substantial portion of stem, and how deep should I plant the stem?

How do you stop big roots from growing?

We had a huge mound of ivy in a flower bed and removed most of it, but the roots beneath were huge. I don’t think we’ll be able to get them out, but I’d like to at least stop them from growing. We’d like to plant other plants in this area, so any harsh chemicals probably won’t work. Any ideas for stopping root growth?

How would I go about identifying a strange plant in my garden: straight stalk, large velvety leaves?

Last year, it came up “voluntarily” in my garden. It has a very straight, very sturdy stalk about 3 feet high, with large, velvety leafs. I didn’t see any flowers, and there was no fruit. The stalk withstood the winter, and now the leaves are growing like mad. I tried to pull it, but it is a very strong plant, with good root structure – apparently not a weed. Anyone have any ideas?
