Best foliage for full/partial shade under pines?

Help! I am trying to get complete answer on what would be the best flowers and green plants to plant in partial to full shade that are midsize in height and (Here is the hard part) will do well under pine trees. (Something about the soil around them) I live in WV, so if annuals (which I prefer) they would have to be for my grow zone. Please help, I have searched and quized local gardeners, but I get different answers every single time.

On the growth of a sun flower does soil quality vary from one country to another?

this is for a project on growing sunflowers.

How do I get rid of white powdery mold on my squash plants?

I’m in Virginia, plants are getting plenty of sun and the soil appears to be good. I’ve added organic soil and plant food to the garden. Tomatos, chili peppers and herbs are growing okay, but not my squash or pumkin plants.

What’s up with my Sage plant?

I recently bought a young Sage plant to add to my herb box, which also contains Chives, Thyme, and Parsley. The plants are evenly spaced, planted in fresh potting soil, and the box is well drained. The original three plants are thriving.

According to most gardening sites, young Sage plants should start off in a small cluster of leaves. In time, it should grow into a woody shrub-like plant.

All that being said, my little plant does not look like that. Instead, it has a vine-like appearance. It’s basically one long, thin stem with only a few leaves growing at the top. I’ve debated cutting it down or tying it up with a stake, but I would like to be sure what is best before I take any action.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. And if you need more information from me, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thanks!

How deep does soil have to be to plant flowers in? Please help?

I don’t know much about gardening… but I moved to a place that had patio stones throughout the whole backyard. Underneath the patio stones is screening. (you know.. tiny tiny rocks or gravel-like rocks).
So I made a small flowerbed and put 3 inches of soil over the screening. (under the screening is clay because the land used to be an apple orchard)
So I bought already grown flowers: Dahlias, Geraniums, Petunias. Then I planed them in the flowerbed. Are they going to die because they don’t have enough depth of soil to grow roots in the ground underneath? If so.. please tell me how much soil do I need to have on top of the screening so I could re-plant the flowers?

Thank you so much if you can help!

How do I keep my herb plants alive???

I just bought some herb plants from the farmer’s market…two kinds of basil, one lemon tyme, and one trailing rosemary. The basil I’m not too worried about; I usually do okay with it. The thyme and rosemary I always seem to fail with. They are newly planted with fresh soil in their own pots. They’re on the back porch, with lots of sun, but not full direct sun. I’m in New Orleans, and full sun all day is a killer for a lot of plants. I plan to bring them in when it gets cold and put them in a sunny window. What else should I do to keep them alive and get them to grow full? Like, how often do I water and trim them?

Should Herbs be grown in a pot or directly in the soil?

Should Herbs be grown in a pot or directly in the soil?

Overwatering vs underwatering?

How do you tell the difference between a plant that’s dying from lack of water compared to one that’s dying from something like root rot? I have some potted herbs and there’s a number of factors compounding the issue, such as availability of sun (balcony grown, gets a couple hours less sunlight than normal) and non-ideal soil (very rich). In particular thyme and oregano aren’t doing well, but sage, rosemary, basil seem to be doing fine, and I don’t know why the first two are dying. Lavender is doing so-so. I can’t tell if its from lack of water or too much of it! I water them well twice a week… is that too much? It was really hot last week and that’s making it harder for me to figure it out. I don’t want to have to replace them again!

I want to plant some herbs and veggies but I am worried about soil contamination?

I have a great little spot off my patio that I would like to plant a few things in this summer. For the past two years we have had a pest prevention company spray around our house. As much as I hate it, there was no other way to control the ants (and I found a teranchula in the back yard, no joke). So, do you think the soil is contaminated and I should not grown anything in the bed? Thanks for your help.

The best forage for goats?

Hello. I live in south texas and I have one boer goat as a pet. He lives on grain and sudan hay, but I would like to try to grow grass in my yard for him to eat. My yard is approximately a quarter of an acre and is mostly shady, and the soil is very rocky with clay underneath. I don’t know what kind of seed to plant. I have considered planting sudan or johnson grass for him, but are there maybe some other kind of herb or mix that I should plant? Thank you very much for your help.
He’s blind and would’ve been put to sleep if I hadn’t taken him. So I think he would prefer alone to dead. Plus he has the dogs for friends. And he doesn’t eat the weeds or carpet grass that is already in the backyard.
And he gets apples and various veggies on a regular basis, but he lives in the garage and doesn’t go outside much. I want the grass to encourage him to spend more time outside.
