What would grow in poor sandy soil?

I live in southern California, and I’m working on amending my soil with home grown compost (I won’t use the stuff that comes in bags), but I still have some areas that are the poor sandy soils of this region. I’m going to eventually turn this into a vegetable plot, and I already have native plants. What kinds of vegetables, herbs, or even cover crops might grow well here to start out with?
Thanks for any help.

Help with potted bouganvillias for a privacy screen?

I’m in Southern California, and I wanted to grow some potted climbing vines on a trellis to make a privacy wall on my patio. I love bouganvillias so I started there. While they flower often, they are long and spindly instead of full — they’re not providing the privacy screen I wanted. Do pots just limit the roots and therefore the growth of bouganvillias? Is there a trick to helping it grow nice and full, or should I be trying another potted vine that would provide fuller coverage of the trellis?
The pot is pretty big — about 18 inches across. The patio is sunny most of the day, shady in early morning.

Help me figure out what this plant is!?

I found a small plant today near Palos Verdes (Southern California) in a loose, rocky cliff canyon next to the ocean. The plant is green, succulent, and the entire plant and stems are covered in tiny pearl-like water-filled sacs/globes. They look like jewels. The stems terminate into a small reddish looking berry/bud. Any ideas?

Here are some pictures that I just took:

What signals the end of the life of a vegetable plant in a climate like Southern California?

I learned that Southern Californians can garden all year long because it doesn’t get colder than 60 degrees. Apparently a pepper plant, for instance, can be productive for over a year. My question is, does the pepper / tomato plant just stop making peppers after a year but still stand there looking green, so that the gardner notices that it’s not producing and then digs it up and replaces it? Or does the pepper plant get brown and die on its own?
I’ve always lived in the midwest, where the first frosts kill off all plant life off in the winter, so this is new information for me.
