Identify a tree for me?

When I was a kid we had a tree out on our street and Ive always wondered what it was. The tree only grew to be about 15 feet tall and never grew beyond that, we never had to trim branches or anything. It would grow bright red spiky berries about the size of a grape or cherries. Inside of the berries were dark yellow. There were never any flowers and from what I can remember it kept its leaves year around. In some places the bark had warn off and it was really smooth wood underneath. The tree is dead now so I cant really take a picture and I’ve never seen another tree like it. I live in Southern California.

What are some locations where vegetables would grow year around? Where one can eat their own produce always?

I’m in southern California where we don’t have our own water and where most of the orchards are dying from drought conditions. Many central California farmers didnt plant (at all) this season. Not too many of you have been told yet, but even the great USofA is low on water and food resources. But it doesnt matter much if you dont have your job still or if prices keep rising ($8 for 5 oranges?!?). I have come up with the coast of southern Oregon on my own — its cheap, water falls from the sky year-round, and the temperatures are moderate. There is already a permaculture site nearby where they have been eating their own produce for years. I dont think there are many other places where this can be done comfortably. For example, the south/Florida is miserable with bugs and/or humidity and/or a population/poverty problem. Locations OUTSIDE of the old USofA are of GREAT interest to me also (especially if they have citizenship availabilities a la Spain). thankyou.

What berry bush/apple tree should I get?

I live in southern California and I want to get a berry bush and an apple tree. For the berry bush I think I want to stick with the normal varieties (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries), but I am willing to try something different if someone really suggests it. I am looking for something tasty, appropriate for the weather, something that doesn’t need two plants to be pollinated, something that bears a lot of fruit, and is pretty hardy.
For the apple tree, I’m pretty much just looking for a variety that you think is tastes good and is successful. Thanks!

Does Knott’s Berry Farm still have night admission or half day passes?

Growing up in southern california we used to head up to Disnelyand and knotts berry farm all the time on the evening because they offered evening passes (6-midnight) for a cheaper rate. I am looking on line and can not find that as an option any more. I am taking a soccer team to irvine for a tournament thanksgiving weekend and we want to spend an evening at disneyland or knotts berry farm as a team.

Thanks for your help in advance.

What kind of plant or flower will grow in hot, full sun in Southern California?

I need a plant or flower that I can keep in a pot that can stand being in full sun. My pation gets the hottest afternoon sun, and everything I buy just dies because it is too hot.
I prefer no cactus or succulents.
It can be any size as long as I can keep it in a pot.

I love Costa Rica fruit and vegetables, Does any one know where I can obtain seeds to grow them in California?

- I know that not all friuts/vegeatbles, can be grown in Southern California, due to the weather. But can anyone know what Costa Rica fruit/vegetables can be grown in Southern California, and where can one purchase the seeds/plants?
- I really like Costa Rica even though I was born in NY, but my family is from Costa Rica, any fellowships or Costa Rica supermarkets/grocers which one can buy Costa Rica products in California, in the Corona, CA area. Thanks

What flowers?

What flowers would be good to grow in May in southern California for someone who has trouble keeping things alive? If any.

How should I plant my vegetable garden?

I just built two raised beds. They are each 3.25′ by 12′, running north/south, with two feet between the beds, in Southern California. Mild weather. Lots of sun. Very dewy every morning. Planning on drip irrigation.

I want to plant for:
maximum vegetable harvest, year ’round

Have had lots of success with artichokes, tomatoes (omg!), zukes, cukes, strawberries, eggplants, jalepenos, etc.

What should I plant where in my new beds? I don’t know anything about permaculture, or companion plants. I just like to eat vegetables.

We have terrible aphids!
