Container gardening?

Hey there, so I live in a town house with my mom and brother, so we can’t plant a garden like we had at our old house, so I want to do some container gardening, I went to the farmers market, and bought all sorts of little plants to grow vegetables and herbs, any tips for container gardening?

can i clone a vegitable/herb plant without any adverse effects?

i got myself some cloning hormone at my local garden shop, i’ve cloned plants before, but never vegetables or herbs, and as I was reading the instructions it says do not clone vegetables or anything edible. I was wondering why not? and what would happen if I did? would the vegetable or herb be harmful if it was grown as a clone??
@ Maverick:

cloning as in taking a small cutting from a larger plant and forcing it to root with rooting hormone in a medium such as soil or sand. I understand that some plants do not require rooting hormone, but those plants are very minimal and rooting hormone is usually required for larger and more woody plants.
edit 2:

yeah we used to call it propagation too, which is the same as cloning correct? we usually cloned woody plants, like elephants food, and other types of flowers.

you kinda have me confused… you say that plants can’t be cloned, but then you do..??

it’s very surprising to me that a botanist has never heard of rooting hormone, or in fact, cloning at all! there is are so many products that can be used for this exact purpose:

http://www.plantitearth.com/store/default.asp?catid=7

again, i said it is possible to clone some plants withOUT any hormones involved, but it’s much harder and requires much more attention, and the hormone usually gives it a big boost and helps the rooting tips form sooner.
@ ninja,

yeah i was thinking the exact same ninja, i found it odd that the instructions said not to clone them and I had no idea why!
@ mav… ugh, i don’t understand why you’re making a big deal about the definition of new terms and old terms. who cares, it’s the same thing.. i got into botany only a couple years back, so my terms are probably updated, and this is where our conflict begins.. i don’t understand why you seem to be so aggressive with your statements. you may be right that i won’t need any hormone solution to propagate vegies and herbs, but i guarantee that the horm. solution will boost my success rates by a lot.
@ mav again:
since you seem so surprised to me using a rooting/cloning hormone to propagate a vegie or herb cutting, then how would your ideal method be to achieve a successful propagated plant without any hormone or rooting stimulus?

Container gardening with vegetables?

I’d like to grow cherry tomatoes, lettuce, pea pods, green beans, and herbs. Can you grow those types of things in window boxes…or are those too shallow? I’ve never gardened in containers before; I’d appreciate any good info. Thank you!!!

No sun gets to my patio. What are the best native California plants to plant in containers?

I have a lovely, large patio…except that it gets absolutely no sun. I would very much like to grow some native plants as a container garden – maybe even some herbs and vegetables. But I don’t even know where to begin to find out what plants will work in complete, total shade.

Vegetables/herbs for dry garden?

I have an area that I am starting up as a vege garden, but am having trouble due to it drying out and stunting the plants

I water as much as i can and even use a deep root waterer, but unless I do it every day, the plants start to shrivel.

The garden is mulched, soil is poor(quite sandy). I have introduced some compost and manure and the organic material has nearly gone already.

What are some vegetables herbs or other edible/useful plants that I could grow?

How do I build a garden on my balcony?

I live in an apartment with a balcony. I would like to grow my own vegetables and herbs such as cilantro. How do I build a vegetable garden on my balcony. Lots of sun shines on my balcony in the morning and some to none by mid-afternoon/evening. I appreciate your gardening wisdom.

Do you think the world is reverting back to the old days?

It is true that way back when, of coarse i am too young to know what that was like, people lived very simply. I myself try to live as simple as possible and as green as possible. Number one it’s healthier for myself and my children. Ive notice that a lot of people are jumping on the band wagon of the natural and organic movement. Does this mean that we are actually realizing that life was much better when we had to work for what we needed. That finally the farmers that have stuck to what they believed in through the struggle could become a success after generations of hard work. My family for years has lived organically, my grandmother and grandfather grew our vegetables and herbs we had some livestock and everything was made from scratch literally. Yes it was hard work but a good nutritious meal was on the table every night.
