What is this growing in my yard??

I planted mammoth sunflowers last year and next to it grew which looks like a sunflower plant but there was no flowers on it just a weird green thing growing out of the top. Well this year in that same area theres about 25 more tall plants growing there. They look just like sunflower plants tall and same kinda leaves but no flowers just that weird green bunch on top. I tried lookin it up for days and I dont see anything like it.
Could it be an herb that looks like that and grows that tall? Maybe whoever lived here before us grew something there. I have no idea. I dont want to pick it if its goin to be a pretty flower or something but then again if its nothing I want it out.
Tanks hope someone can help. Oh Im in central california if that helps at all.
damselch..nope doesnt look like that, i know thats a sunflower gettin ready to open…..

It kinda looks like marajuana how it buds up on top but no its not pot lol

How do I identify a ground cover plant in my yard?

It is green and purple in color. It grows in a spiral kind of pattern I had noticed. It is slowly creeping out and taking up more space. It is very low to the ground and I noticed in spring it had tiny little purple flowers that shoot up about 3 inches at the most. The leaves are kind of scalloped on the edges and small and kind of long (like oval or rectangular) in shape. Please help help me find the name of this plant. I would like to know more about it.

a question for gardeners?

so i just became a home owner and am excited about this big yard.i think it would be fun to get some things growing. previous owners did a little. there are tulips(which i would like to transplant), sweet peas(not sure if i want to keep those), theres a rose plant but i’m not sure if it’s in too good a shape. and little purple wildflowers(kinda looks like an upside down bunch of grapes on a green stem).some great trees and bushes.
this is what i’m thinking of planting this year:
*veggies: pumpkin, tomato, cucumber
*flowers:flax, poppy,columbine(dragonfly hybrid)
*herbs:mint, lavender,basil
any tips/suggestions?

Getting rid of “Creeping Johnny” in lawn???

I’ve tried numerous weed killers from the very expensive to the natural remedies. This weed just keeps cropping up all over my yard and has started to make its way into my flower beds. I generally find myself pulling up on the tubers that grow within the grass, but they break and it is hard to pull up the whole plant. A gardner once told me that it actually starts growing in February and this is in Ohio. Anyone know of a good method to stop this pesky weed. Many thanks in advance.

Whats the quickest and cheapest way to clear land?

I’ve got a very overgrown back yard (new to the house) and want to clear land and plant a garden, grass and flowers. We have worked weekend after weekend cutting, hauling, pruning and clearning and it’s still pretty crowded back there. Any experience and advice on clearing vines that have grown into tall OLD pine trees, clearing poison Ivy and poison Oak, digging up old dead bushes, and removing years worth of pine straw and leaves would be greatly appreciated. I can NOT afford to hire the work out but I can afford some great super tool or machine that would cut my load considerably if there is such a thing.

What is the best way to remove grass from my flower bed?

I have two flower beds in my front yard with shrubs covered in mulch. I continually get grass growing in them and need to remove it.

Best way to grow basil in a pot?

Help! I have always had a herb garden (planted in the earth). This year we have just moved to a home with a very tiny yard (we’re on the golf course and they seem to frown on us planting on the greens… lol). I have filled the flower beds around the house too full of blooming things to have any room for herbs. Sooo, I planted loads of terracotta pots and placed them on the back terrace. All the herbs are doing great except for the Basil. It’s dying!! Any suggestions as to how I can help it along? It gets full sun, isn’t over or under watered, and is planted in miracle grow potting soil. I’ve always had basil flourish- this is vexing! Thanks in advance for the help.

Could you guess at what this flower is called?

I’m not sure. I’d really like to find out. It was growing in the garden in my front yard (in West Virginia) over the summer. It had a dark purple, spikey bulb thing on top with leaves around the bottom of the bulb. I can’t really remember if they were poking outward or wrapping around it..
It was a really sturdy flower with a thick stem. It smelled nice too. Personally, I thought it smelled like grapes. Idk how relevent that would be though.

Thanks for any help.<3
It's not lavender. This just has one bulb that's about the size and shape of a large strawberry.
There were like 3 seperate pointed parts to each leaf, as I recall.

The bulb wasn't made up of little seperate flowers. It was one solid thing. But not actually "solid". It could be easily ripped apart.

How do I prepare soil before planting bulbs?

I haven’t had good luck when planting bulbs. The green leaves would grow. But I don’t get many flowers and when I do, they only last a few days. Sometimes I get buds that die before they bloom. My yard is semi-shaded. I live in Eastern North Carolina. Do I need to fertilize or do something to my soil?
